E-mail Viruses
Thanks to certain software developers in the quest to develop more "user friendly software"
that allow executable code within E-mail messages to be automatically executed E-mail
viruses are now possible, and prevalent. What was once a somewhat amusing hoax is now
a reality. Fortunately those of us who still use less feature-rich E-Mail programs cannot be
infected with such email-viruses. The below can be considered mostly obsolete.
There has been a lot of bandwidth wasted on misinformation about e-mail viruses.
These are viruses that spread themselves via e-mail. This is not possible, a
virus is a program, and must be executed before it can replicate itself or cause
any damage. When you read e-mail you are simply displaying the information
within that message on your screen, you are never executing code within the
e-mail message. It is possible to include a virus in an executable binary
attachment, but the receiver would have to download and intentionally execute the
virus. The virus would not execute automatically upon being read.

If you're still worried about e-mail viruses then you better look out
for Goodtimes II. It's like goodtimes, but it randomly picks a subject line from
a past e-mail you sent or received. Then it sends copies of itself to everyone
whose e-mail address is contained in a received-mail file or a sent-mail file
using the new subject line. At least with goodtimes you could protect yourself
by never reading an e-mail message with the subject line 'Good times.' With
goodtimes II the only way to protect yourself is to never read e-mail, because
any message may be infected, regardless of header. The only way to really
protect yourself is to keep off the internet altogether then you will also be
safe from the HTML version of Goodtimes II.
